Cruise ships and planes aren’t the only ways to get around the Caribbean. Many Caribbean islands in close proximity have an alternate options for you can arrive. I’ve heard that traveling the Caribbean can be a logistical nightmare but it’s not really once you have adequate information and time!
Here’s a listing of ferry services and water taxis that you may use for island-hopping in particular Caribbean regions. Whether it be day trips, one-way trips or round trips, the adventure is yours to embark upon! This information was accurate at the time of publication, you are advised to contact the ferry service providers for the most up to date routes, schedules and fares.
L’Express des Iles connects the three islands in Guadeloupe (main island, Les Saintes and Marie Galante) as well as Dominica, Martinique and Saint Lucia. The regional routes start at 32USD roundtrip and can be as high as 65USD. The international routes range between 110USD and 155USD for a roundtrip – still pretty excellent as compared to a flight!
The Makana Ferry Service connects four territories in the Northern Eastern Caribbean: Saba, St. Maarten, St. Eustatius (Statia) and St. Kitts & Nevis. The prices depend on the route selected but the lowest roundtrip fare was 58USD and highest at 199USD with most fares between the 80-115USD range.
Great Bay Express Ferry Service connects the beautiful Saint Barts to St Maarten for 115USD roundtrip. Here’s another website (click here) that you can see multiple water taxi providers to move between St. Bart’s, St. Maarten, Anguilla and Saba. The water taxi fares will depend on the routes you’re embarking up but you can expect to pay around 150USD.
Belize, the Caribbean country located in Central America, has the Sprinter which zips between multiple destinations Belize City on mainland Belize and the islands of Caye Caulker and San Pedro Town on Ambergris Caye. Roundtrips average less than 40USD between the three domestic locations.
Within St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Bequia Express and Admiral Royalty service mainland St. Vincent and its major southern Grenadines islands. If you’re traveling with a vehicle between mainland St. Vincent and Bequia the fare is 55USD and that’s the highest fare amongst all the routes.
Trinidad and Tobago has the inter-island ferry service to travel between the two islands for up to 60USD with a vehicle.
With over 700 islands in The Bahamas, we would hope there’s a service here! Thank you Bahamas Ferries. Navigate the website to find the fares for your specific route. For example between Nassau, New Providence island to Spanish Wells, Eleuthera, you can expect fares around 250USD roundtrip.
Grenada has the Osprey Lines to connect the dots between Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinque. Roundtrip adult fares are 16USD between Carriacou and Petit Martinque, and are 62USD between Grenada and Carriacou.
Check out the best of British Virgin Islands water taxi/ferry services here (bestofbvi.com) fares typically average 30USD. You can also ferry across to the US Virgin Islands pretty easily with these services.
The multi-island Turks and Caicos also has a ferry service (here) as some of its islands do not have regularly scheduled flights. You can expect to pay 30USD for a roundtrip ferry ride between Provo (Providenciales) and North & Middle Caicos.
Catching flights aren’t the only way to island-hop, you can often catch the more scenic route via ferry and water-taxi services.
